What is a Heavenly Father?

If God is our heavenly Father, what does that really mean in our everyday life? Is His will for our lives something we won't like? Is God no fun at all?

Being in God's will is the happiest place to be. PS 16:11 says "In Your presence is the fullness of joy!" Look at what David is saying in Psalm 16:

1. Keep and protect me, O God, for in You I have found refuge, and  in You do I put my trust and  hide myself.

2. I say to the LORD, You are my Lord; I have no good beside or beyond You.

3. As for the godly who are in the land, they are the excellent, the noble, and  the glorious, in whom is all my delight.

4. Their sorrows shall be multiplied who choose another god; their drink offerings of blood will I not offer or take their names upon my lips.

5. The Lord is my chosen and assigned portion, my cup; You hold and maintain my lot.

6. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; yes I have a good heritage.

7. I will bless the Lord, who has given me good counsel; yes, my heart instructs me in the night seasons.

8. I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9. Therefore my heart is glad and my glory (my inner self) rejoices; my body too shall rest and confidently dwell in safety.

10. For you will not abandon me to Sheol (the place of the dead), neither will you suffer Your holy one to see corruption.

11. You will show me the path of life; in your presence is fullness of joy, at Your right hand there are pleasures forever-more. Ps 16 (Amp)

So then, what is meant by the fear of God?

It is the concept that we had better understand who God is, what He wants, and what he expects us to do. If we want what is best for us, we had best become willing to do it.

What is it like to have an ideal Father?

The idea of a heavenly father is not always a positive one in people's minds. Your initial perception of a heavenly father might depend a lot on the kind of earthly father you had. Maybe your father was NOT like Dr. Huxtable on "The Cosby Show". Dr. Huxtable was always there with a wise and patient attitude, loving his kids.   He didn't want his kids to be naive, foolish or stupid. So he taught them as much as he could about life.

To understand God, try to imagine an ideal father, maybe someone like Dr. Huxtable. He has lots of money and prestige. He is fun to be around. He is trustworthy and you can tell him anything, even the stuff you did wrong. Does it sound too good to be true? Is all this just wishful thinking? No, God really is like that ideal father. What if you don't agree that is true? Well, other people who know God testify to His goodness. Read Psalm 16 shown at the left. David experienced protection, provision, and joy from knowing his heavenly father.

It may be very hard to understand what a loving heavenly father is if we have been really disappointed by our earthly father. But God is different. He is not a super smart really old person. He is far far more than we can comprehend or think about. He is trust worthy. He knows we can grow to where we need to be, if we are willing to listen to Him. If you just can't believe this, that is OK, just ask Him for help.  We are not expected to understand everything, so we have to ask for help, no matter what age we are.

Is God out to get you?

No, He is out to give you Himself! Many people see God as a big spoil sport. He is trying to protect you, not spoil your fun.

His laws seem so restrictive, how can anyone who is a Christian have any fun?

The problem is that people who think God is out to spoil their fun underestimate the value of God's presence, wisdom and guidance.

What is fun really anyway?

Is it waking up with a hangover? Is it waking up in an empty bed when your partner leaves you? Is it getting your credit card statement and not being able to pay for all that stuff? People will always disappoint us. Real joy can be found in God's presence. Yet most of the time we shut out God's presence with noise and busyness.
